Advocacy is more than just understanding the issues. To make a difference, you have to
make your voice heard. The involvement of individual emergency nurses is vital to the
success of our grassroots efforts. We encourage all ENA members to use the services
available at the Legislative Action Center so that you can take an active role in the public
policy issues facing emergency nursing. If you have any comments regarding the site,
send a note to

I feel that is an appropriate date, to ask my fellow FENA members to step up and help us to protect
and promote legislation that will make our state a safer place to live.  ENA code of ethics’ state

The emergency nurse works to improve public health and secure access to health care for all.

We are called to protect and improve the public health as Emergency Nurses.  This is a call to
action!  We can make a difference, it is happening in other states, and if we ACT, it can happen
here.  We have an action plan in place to make four improvements in our state laws, I am asking
you to:

1.   Sign up for ENA’s national alerts.  I have just found out that I can use this alert system to reach
FENA members when needed.  So set up and ask your fellow ENA members at work to do the
same.  See the link.

2.        Read our NEW ENA Health Care Reform Platform.  This is let you know what ENA ‘s
positions are, and help us to be better informed consumers, organized in our national vision. See
the link.

3.        Write your state legislators and let them know what is important to us, and the laws  we
need to take better care of our patients.  You can use the letters that are preformatted on this site
or write your own, we have also included some information sheets on this site that your facts are
current.  If you are writing your own letter, be sure to include stats/ or personal stories from your
local hospital.

Another tool that is coming soon, is the release of the ENA score card.  This will be useful as this
tool measures Florida against  the other states to see how we “measure up” – I fear that since we
have not been very active in promoting and improving our state safety laws that we will have
slipped even farther in our ratings.

It is time to stand up and make a difference,  I look forward to seeing many of you in Minneapolis,
and seeing how we did on the score card.  Become active and be part of the solution, making our
state a better place to live, work and play.

Thank you,
Sheri Cook RN CEN
