Hello Florida ENA members,
This WILL affect YOUR nursing practice; please read. Your ENA state council has been working closely with the Florida College of Emergency Physicians to propose rule language to the Florida Board of Nursing and would like your support.
You may know that the Florida Board is considering amending the Unprofessional Conduct rule (“law”) regarding RN’s administering propofol and similar medication. If the current proposed language is passed it would require that “a practitioner experienced in general anesthesia” (IE anesthesiologist/nurse anesthesis) be the one to administer propofol for moderate/procedural sedation. There is plenty of evidence that this can be done safely and efficient in the ED by a team of skilled ED physicians and ED nurses. ENA has a position statement and signed a joint consensus statement advocating such. These are available to you at www.ena.org.
The Board wants to hear from nurses. Your Florida state council has developed a petition to send to the Board at their next meeting in Miami. You may read the petition and sign it (there is no charge) by going to: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/fledsedation. This will be presented to the Board of Nursing at their next meeting in Miami.
If you would like to read the current proposed language you can Google “Florida rule 64B9-8.005” and see the history and current proposal. The meeting is Dec. 1-3 in Miami.
Thank you,
Your Florida ENA Executive Board
